There's going to be free games given out. There's going to be tournaments held. There will be a life size paintball match done in a re-creation of one of the multiplayer levels of Call of Duty: Moder Warfare 2. So I think its safe to say that Activision is going all out with this thing. This thing, of course, being Call of Duty XP, the world's first Call of Duty convention.
I am going to go out on a limb here. This is me on the limb. On this limb I am going to say that I think its kinda weird to have an entire convention based around a military shooter game. Star Trek, Star Wars, Transformers, those I can see having expansive and elaborate conventions set up around them. But Call of Duty? The one that tries to replicate actual real world based firefights? Just strikes me as weird, is all.
However, I cannot deny the overwhelming popularity of the Call of Duty series. This thing is a juggernaut, trampling over smaller gaming franchises like they were ants in front of a dinosaur. So I guess if Activision is going to do a con, its going to do it right.
First of all, there's the tournament where people actually play Call of Duty. There will be a $1 million, 32-slot single elimination tournament in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. $400,000 for the winning squad. Six digits. For playing a video game really well. Thats more digits than I would make in five years right now. And you know what? Just for showing up to XP you get a code which will net you the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition for free. You also get a first look at Call of Duty: Elite, the MMO-ish Call of Duty game.
