Big Games of 2013: Star Trek Boldly Goes To Consoles

Kirk, Spock and crew go all Mass Effect-y on us early next year.

No Bones about it – ha, I made a funny – J.J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek in 2009 was quite the successful one, despite all the lens flare.  The movie reintegrated interest in the franchise, thanks to a great young cast and a story that actually made sense to fans.  And with a sequel on the way next year, we can only wonder what next great step is gonna happen within the video game realm.  Well, thanks to Namco Bandai games, we know.  Set phasers to stun-ning.

Star Trek, a game that was first given life last year at E3, is now officially in the hands of Namco Bandai Games, and the company has set an official launch date of early next year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii (possibly Wii U) and PC.  Why next year, you ask?  Number one, the company is probably trying to stay out of direct competition with EA’s own little space epic, Mass Effect 3 – a smart idea.  And number two, its release is being timed with J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek sequel, which will hit theaters next summer, and feature the return of the entire cast, including Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as Kirk.  So, there’s that to be excited for, too.  More lens flare!

Anyway, let’s talk about the game.  Namco Bandai is certainly showing plenty of excitement behind it, per their press release.  “Star Trek continues to be one of the most beloved entertainment properties around the world, and Namco Bandai America is extremely excited to be teaming up with Paramount Pictures to create the definitive Star Trek interactive experience,” said Carlson Choi, VP of Marketing for Namco Bandai Games America Inc.

Now, let’s get down to the game itself.  We didn’t see much of it last summer, but it’s very Mass Effect-like when it comes to delivering on adventure.  The game will focus primarily on Kirk and Spock, with a little help from the ship’s doctor, Bones, and possible other crew members, as they battle an interstellar evil that threatens the galaxy to a grand degree.  Hopefully it’s not that stupid God complex that made Star Trek V such a drag years ago.  We doubt it.
