In a small dark theater in a corner of the E3 2011 show floor, Capcom showed off a new video preview of Resident Evil Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS. The new Resident Evil is a return to the series survival horror roots, with the addition of the improved engine the series adopted from Resident Evil 4 onward. The game acts as a "prequel" to the events of Resident Evil 5, focusing on series originator Jill Valentine's search for Chris Redfield on an abandoned cruise ship.
The ship is sinking, and water exploration and combat are among Revelations new features. The video focuses on new playable character "Parker" and his efforts to swim from air pocket to air pocket while battling new underwater bio weapons. You'll be helped along by new "pulse grenades." The sonic weapon releases a blast of sound underwater, one hit killing any bio weapon in your path.
The Nintendo 3DS handles the Resident Evil 5 engine well, churning out graphics equivalent to the Playstation 2 Resident Evil 4 port. The dark visuals of the sinking ship mark the series "survival horror" direction, and you can expect the difficult enemies and limited ammo of Resident Evil games of yore.
Resident Evil Revelations has a tentative release date of 2012 and it is both developed and published by Capcom.
