Sony is no stranger to taking its PlayStation 2 classics and remastering them for PlayStation 3 collections, but it’s been a business practice that’s proven worthwhile. Both of the God of War compilations (Collection and Origins Collection) are outstanding; Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are in a class by themselves; and this year’s Jak and Daxter Collection has been nothing short of marvelous. Now Insomniac Games gets a turn, even though the company’s moved on to duo-console development, as three of its greatest PS2 efforts are being celebrated in a new collection. And, yes, it’s Ratchet and Clank.
Long-rumored but even longer in confirmation, Ratchet and Clank Collection is finally happening, bringing the duo’s three original adventures to the PlayStation 3 front this fall.
The first of the games, Ratchet and Clank, explains how the duo got together in the first place, and introduces the gameplay that would since become a staple in action shooters, with plenty of strafing and run and gun action to go around. It would also introduce the first of many madcap weapons to come, as well as a futuristic landscape that, to date, still remains wildly original.
Two other games, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, are also included in the collection, and these are vital parts to the saga as well. Commando introduced even more weapons, bigger environments and crazier action, while Up Your Arsenal tops off the package with a surprising inclusion – multiplayer. And for the first time on the PS3, Ratchet and Clank multiplayer is happening through the PlayStation Network. Why it’s missing from the contemporary RAC games is beyond us, but oh well, we’ll take what we can get.
