Defying some expectations that Apple today would introduce the iPhone 5—an entirely new model supporting 4G—the company instead rolled out the iPhone 4S, an incremental update of the existing iPhone 4. This confirms the HIS outlook issued in July that the new iPhone introduced by Apple in 2011 likely would not include the next-generation 4G technology known as Long Term Evolution (LTE). IHS continues to expect that Apple will introduce an LTE-capable iPhone 5 when an affordable chipset solution allowing a thinner form factor is available. The iPhone 5 most likely will arrive in late 2012, or in mid-2013.

The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has taken the first in-depth study that provides an exclusive look at the first-hand experiences of nearly 3,100 3D-compatible television (3DTV) owners. One consoles, Madden has already broken sales records, so this is a way for the game giant to give back to its mobile players.

The study explores attitudes, behaviors, motivations, psychographics, and purchase intent among the current US social gaming population. When some of the more compact cell phones came out in the late 1990s, they all came packed with games like Snake, but most people never really thought anything of them. With the advent of smartphones such as the iPhone, mobile gaming has become the latest craze. It slowly gained momentum as the iPhone became more popular, and now has reached an all-time high thanks to games like Angry Birds. If one wanted to make an easy profit, it would make sense that developing a game on this platform can bring in some nice profits. However, Satoru Iwata recently stated that Nintendo will not be joining the party and instead focus on console-based gaming.

Browser-based video game publisher continues its rapid expansion. The game maker has taken over the entire production team of Hamburg-based development studio 49Games. More than 40 full-time employees will now become part of Bigpoint’s international team and will be developing online games instead of console titles. The current projects under development in 49Games will be completed by the production team. Aside from the production team, all rights to their multiplatform technology, assets, licenses etc. remain the property of 49Games GmbH.

The virtual goods business is booming, and not just in the PC gaming space. A new report from MocoSpace found that Caucasians and African Americans over-index on virtual goods spending. Caucasians, which made up 18 percent of surveyed users, made 26 percent of virtual goods purchases. African Americans, which comprised 36 percent of surveyed respondents, made up 38 percent of purchases, a slight over-index.

Driven by booming sales of low-end models, shipments of smartphone will rise to account for more than half of the worldwide cellphone market in 2015, according to a new IHS iSuppli Mobile Handset Market Tracker report. Global smartphone unit shipments will soar to 1.03 billion units in 2015, more than double the 478 million in 2011.

Epic Games has finished Microsoft's Gears of War 3, one of the big games of 2011. With the game studio working on other projects, the tech team has been busy updating the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free version of Unreal Engine 3, with new content for developers to access. Cologne -- Gamescom keeps getting bigger. Over 275,000 people from around the world trekked to the small German city of Cologne to check out the latest video games up close and personal. Attendance for this year’s Gamescom 2011, which ran August 17-21, was up 21,000 from last year’s convention. There was also a larger media presence, including from the U.S., as more game publishers debuted new titles at the show than ever before.

Rovio is officially going Hollywood. The game developer from Helsinki has big plans for its Angry Birds franchise. The latest move is the hiring of Andrew Stalbow as General Manager of North America. In his previous role as Senior Vice President of Mobile at Fox Digital Entertainment, Andrew was responsible for app publishing and video licensing for 20th Century Fox properties such as Glee, Avatar and The Simpsons, and worked with Rovio on the development of the Angry Birds Rio game, a unique integration between Angry Birds and the Fox film Rio.
