Activision and Treyarch want gamers to prepare for Call of Duty’s new online assault.  The Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike game add-on will first launch worldwide on Xbox LIVE February 1. The first downloadable content expansion for the bestselling game will later be released for PlayStation 3. Christmas shopping got off to a fast start last week with stores like Toys R Us, K-Mart and Wal-Mart open on Thanksgiving. When confronted with a wide range of Black Friday retail options, U.S. consumers turned to Nintendo. Nintendo sold 900,000 combined units in the Nintendo DS family of systems and 600,000 Wii consoles between Sunday, November 21, and Saturday, Nov. 27, according to the company’s internal sales estimates. One of the big sellers for Nintendo Wii is Activision’s James Bond GoldenEye 007, which can be seen in this exclusive video below.
Blizzard Entertainment will hold several official launch events to celebrate the upcoming release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the highly anticipated third expansion for the world’s most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Starting on the night of December 6, key retail partners in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and the region of Taiwan will welcome gamers who want to be among the first to purchase and play Cataclysm. Members of the World of Warcraft development team will be on hand at each of the events to meet with players and sign their copies of the expansion.
A controversial television ad, called “People Play Real Life Duty,” advertising Activision’s new Call of Duty Black Ops videogame from Treyarch, is receiving a polarizing reaction from male and female viewers. According to the creative lifecycle management company Ace Metrix, the ad, featuring a montage of real people engaged in simulated video game gunfire, registered a 277 point difference between male and female viewers. Male viewers, age 16-20, gave the ad an Ace Score of 770 (out of total of 950) and female viewers, age 36-49, scored the ad 518. With an overall Ace Score of 644, the ad scored almost 70 points above the videogame category norm of 576. The ad also features a cameo of pro basketball star Kobe Bryant and “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones as its soundtrack.
There’s been no slowdown in the success of Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops has shattered theatrical box office, book and videogame sales records for five-day worldwide sell-through in dollars.  The game established an all-new five-day worldwide sell-through record of more than $650 million, exceeding Activision’s previous five-day worldwide record of $550 million set by last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, according to internal Activision estimates. Treyarch’s Mark Lamia, talks about the new game in this exclusive video interview.
With Call of Duty: Black Ops $360 million launch breaking entertainment records, Activision is giving back to the actual soldiers who have served their country.  Recognizing that the private sector is as responsible as government in solving the issue of veterans’ unemployment, Activision has pledged to find 1,000 jobs for veterans and is donating $1 million from the sales of its blockbuster video game Call of Duty: Black Ops to help transition service members back to civilian life by providing them with job training and placement.
Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops has raked in $360 million in its first 24 hours, breaking the record Modern Warfare 2 had established last year with Modern Warfare 2. The game sold 5.6 million copies on November 9 in North America and the United Kingdom. Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million copies in its first 24 hours. The most anticipated launch of the year is here. Activision has launched Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops at retail stores worldwide. The Call of Duty: Black Ops’ launch follows a record-setting number of midnight openings worldwide, as thousands of retail outlets opened their doors at midnight to deliver the first copies. Michael Pachter, videogame analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities, forecasts that the new game will sell 13 million copies this year and 17 million copies overall worldwide.
