In the past few days, I looked at each major company's E3 press conference and gave my overall impression of each one, elated at some of the things that were announced as well as growl at others. But now, it's time to take a look the big picture. What overall tone did E3 set for the industry? From what I saw, it seems that the industry relied too much on sequels to get things done, not taking enough risks with new IPs to pave the future for each company.

Sonic the Hedgehog will be turning 20 years old this year after making his debut on the Sega Genesis back in 1991. As Mario's #1 rival, Sonic has enjoyed quite a successful career on the Genesis, as well as other platforms further down the line. To celebrate the anniversary, Sega's gift to gamers is Sonic Generations, a game where Sonic travels back in time and speeds alongside his former self in some of Sonic's most memorable levels throughout his career. A few more screenshots have been released, showing off the remastered Green Hill Zone in all of its beauty.

Superman has his flight and his laser sight. Spider-Man has his web and his spider sense. Batman has his gadgets and his bare hands. Sometimes, that's all you really need to fight crime. Sure, there have been plenty of other comic book heroes with more impressive abilities, but no one does it in style like Batman does. While everyone was checking out the new games on the E3 floor, Rocksteady Games released a few more screenshots for Batman: Arkham City. These screenshots show Batman going old school and fighting with hard fists and a few gadgets for good measure.

Sucker Punch Productions became one of the well-known production houses with the work they did on the Sly Cooper series for the PS2. After receiving numerous awards for the series, Sucker Punch took the leap onto the PS3, except they brought someone else with them. That person was Cole McGrath in inFAMOUS. With a solid first title telling the tale of a man who suddenly gains new powers at the cost of innocent lives, it was only right to expect a sequel to build off of inFAMOUS's success. Does inFAMOUS 2 ride the lightning, or has the storm passed over the franchise?

With the second day of E3 all to themselves, Nintendo had the spotlight solely on them. As a matter of fact, they already had the spotlight on them as it was confirmed that they would have a new console to show off at their press conference. The internet was flooded with all sorts of rumors as to what the name of it would be and what the controller would be able to do as supposed photos of the console leaked onto the internet. On June 7th, the Wii U was officially announced as Nintendo's next console, sparking the start of the next console generation. But is the Wii U a full step into the next generation, or does it simply bridge the gap between the next generation and the current?

E3 2011 is over and done with, and my brain and hands are mush from the non stop demos and video presentations. Now that I've had a few days to decompress, here are the top 5 most enjoyable demos on the E3 show floor.

I'm just going to get it out there, the Bioshock Infinite video demo was one of the most exciting things I saw at E3 2011. Bioshock Infinite is set on an alternate history floating Island called Columbia, sort of a skyward World's Fair and a monument to "American Exceptionalism." In this alternate timeline, the floating city became militarily involved in the Boxer Rebellion, killing many innocent civilians. The United States disowned the floating city, and it took to the clouds and out of the public eye. For years it was spoken of as a legend or "Boogie Man" to scare children.

It took nearly two decades of waiting for Nintendo to make a new Kid Icarus title. As a fan of the original, I was particularly excited to run Pit through his Kid Icarus: Uprising paces. The E3 2011 3DS Single Player demo allowed the choice of three separate chapters ranging from easy to hard. I chose the hardest chapter, planting me somewhere in the middle of the game, and was whisked to a weapon select screen. The choices ranged from Pit's classic bow and arrow, to a cannon, a sword, claws, and several other options. After a short story cutscene, the timed demo began.

In a small dark theater in a corner of the E3 2011 show floor, Capcom showed off a new video preview of Resident Evil Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS. The new Resident Evil is a return to the series survival horror roots, with the addition of the improved engine the series adopted from Resident Evil 4 onward. The game acts as a "prequel" to the events of Resident Evil 5, focusing on series originator Jill Valentine's search for Chris Redfield on an abandoned cruise ship.

With Microsoft kicking off E3 in disappointing fashion, it was up to Sony to try to get things back on a happier track with a press conference that would feature better games and other content. Sony had a lot on its plate at E3. They suffered a network outage that lasted over a month due to it being hacked, leaving many PS3 owners upset. Plus, they had a new piece of hardware to show off. Things started to go their way as the Playstation Network was back in full force before E3. Did Sony capitalize on its momentum and blow us away with a great press conference?
