A little while ago, I had done a series of previews for E3, making predictions on what the Big 3 will have in store for us, as well as take a few guesses at what games we might see. From the specifics of Project Cafe to the impact of the NGP, I pitched in my ideas as to what this year’s show will look like. With that out of the way, I wanted to compile a list of what I think will be the top 5 games at E3 this year, but with the chance of some surprises along the way, I’ve decided to play it safe and only used games that have been confirmed. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top 5 confirmed games at E3.
- Dead Island
Originally, this game wasn’t gonna be on the list simply due to the lack of media and info on the game. But when the teaser trailer came out this week, I was totally hyped for this game. The screenshots that have been coming out look really nice, and now that the trailer shows off what the in-game engine is capable of, we can confirm that this game is the real deal. Beyond that, there still isn’t much we can say about the game. But what we do know is that it promises 4-player online co-op, first-person combat, and weapon customization. It surely sounds a good deal like Left 4 Dead, which is in no way a bad thing. I know it’s a bit of a leap of faith, but I’m willing to take it.
- Batman: Arkham City
If Batman: Arkham Asylum didn’t rock your socks off, then I don’t know what will. This game was a total surprise in 2009. Not only was there no Batman movie to base this game off of, but also no one really even knew Rocksteady Studios. That all changed once that game was released. Now, everyone is drooling over the game’s sequel. The screenshots all look really nice, bringing that same dark, gritty look to Gotham City. That coupled with the news that Batman: Arkham City will contain over 40 hours of content makes this game one that everyone will have to look out for. The action and the storytelling was done so well in the first game. I can only imagine what an improved sequel will look like, and I surely can’t wait!
- Battlefield 3
Out of all of the online shooters that currently exist, I would have to say that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the best experience so far in this generation. Rush mode provides a thrilling battleground for two teams to battle it out and defend positions, and Squad Deathmatch is surely an interesting take on the game mode. So of course, Battlefield 3 is gonna make it on my list. The 12-minute trailer looks quite amazing. I thought Crysis 2 looked really good, but this game surely can hold a candle to it. As long as DICE can bring back the excellent multiplayer along with a solid campaign along with some new features in both, then this game definitely deserves to be #3. Sorry Call of Duty fans, but I think you’ve been beaten this year.
- Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
One thing I can say that Bethesda Softworks does really well is making a game where simply walking around aimlessly proves to be a lot of fun. I can’t tell you how much time I put into Fallout 3 just doing that and the different situations I found myself in. I actually played a bit of Elder Scrolls IV, but that was my first experience with a game like that. So being new to that kind of game, my first impressions were a bit skewed as I had no clue what to do. Once I got Fallout 3, I learned the ropes and quickly adapted to it, and what I found was something I fell in love with. Bethesda looks to bring the magic back with Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The screenshots show what looks to be their most epic adventure yet, so if the gameplay we get to see lives up to that, then Bethesda has hit yet another home run.
- Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
How do you follow up such a great sequel as Uncharted 2? Come out with another one! I don’t want to say that’s the case for all games, but the Uncharted series has done a great job so far bringing intense action and adventure much like the Indiana Jones movies did back in the 80s. For one, the game looks great like the others before it. The multiplayer looks much more fleshed out with plenty of new features included. If you have yet to check out our exclusive look at it, then you definitely need to watch the video above. Plus, the 3D in this game is considered to be the best there is yet. Uncharted 3 certainly has the potential to propel 3D gaming to a whole new level if those statements turn out to be true. The Uncharted series has done a great job balancing action, platforming, and adrenaline-filled storytelling to make Nathan Drake one of the major mascots of this generation. From what it looks like, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will uphold the tradition, and for that, this game takes the cake!
This isn’t to say that these games are the best of the show. There will undoubtedly be some surprise titles to surface and have the potential to creep up into the top 5. But since there is a good number of games we do know that will be at E3, we could at least see how these games stack up. It’ll be interesting to see just how the final list will change once E3 is over. Maybe some of these games will only disappoint. There’s only one way to find out… and that’s to wait and see!
